Blount County is located in the eastern Tennessee. and the county seat is at Maryville. The first industry to make its mark on Blount County, as in other neighboring counties, was that of lumber. It was the massive development of this industry in the mountains of east Blount that, in part, led to the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The foothills of the Appalachian Mountains determine much of Blount County's landscape, with a segment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park extending into southeastern Blount County. In addition to the dominant mountains, the Little Tennessee River flows through the county and forms several man-made lakes created by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Cades Cove nestles in a beautiful valley. Open fields lap against 5,500-foot mountain peaks. With more than 2.5 million visitors annually, it is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park's most popular destination. Most people come to these 5,000 open acres to observe the wildlife. In addition to the wide variety of wildlife, several historic buildings date to the nineteenth century, including a working grist mill, barns, three churches, pioneer log cabins, and frame houses.
Not far from the boundaries of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park lie miles of scenic secondary roads. They wind through wooded knobs beside cool streams and meander through rolling farmlands with panoramic views of lofty mountain crests beyond. Through this pleasant land are selected routes particularly appropriate for use by bicyclists.
