If you are looking for the best hiking trails that the Blue Ridge Mountains has to offer, Johnson County has an abundance of scenic trails for all levels of experience. Mountain City is located in the Appalachian Mountain chain. The elevations in the county range from 1800 to 5000 feet above sea level. The elevation of Mountain City is 2350 feet above sea level. Mountain City has the highest elevation of any city in Tennessee.
There is a 30 mile section of the Appalachian Trail and the Iron Mount Trail offers over 18 miles of majestic hiking. For shorter hikes you can also try the Gentry Creek Falls Trail, Backbone Rock Hiking Trails and the Doe Mountain Trail.
You will love the Cherokee National Forest. Twenty-six percent of Johnson County or a total of 49,512 acres is in the Cherokee National Forest. The forest provides great recreation as well as timber for the lumber industry. The Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee's only national forest, stretches along the state's eastern border.
