McMinn County is located in Southeast Tennessee along the I-75 and U.S. 411 corridors halfway between the metropolitan areas of Chattanooga and Knoxville. With a population estimated at over 52,000 people, the 430 square mile county is still considered rural.
The Living Heritage Museum of Athens provides visitors with the chance to step back in time to the days when pioneers made their way cross country and the Cherokee Native Americans lived on the land. Dozens of exhibits recreate the harsh life of early Americans and span into the 20th century. Learn about early education, the introduction of electricity and how industries evolved from fur trading to factories. The facility also features a vast textile collection that includes clothing, hats, weavings and quilts dating back to 1850.
Journey down to Sunshine Hollow, which lies between Chattanooga and Knoxville. Enjoy a pleasant few hours strolling through the Gardens of Sunshine Hollow that covers 20 acres of land and has eight miles of scenic trails and 4,000 feet of flower beds. The numerous flower species found here include Cannas, Dahlias and Daylilies along with Irises, Hostas and Roses. Stop in at the location bakery and find a variety of delectable treats from cakes and candies to jellies and sauces.
