The Cherohala Skyway National Scenic Byway is a must-see for anyone yearning for a beautiful mountain drive. It offers plenty of pull-offs and overlooks equipped with picnic tables, restroom facilities, ample parking, and plenty of photo opportunities. The Cherohala Skyway crosses through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. The Skyway connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, with Robbinsville, North Carolina, and is about 40+ miles long. The elevations range from 900 feet above sea level at the Tellico River in Tennessee to over 5400 feet above sea level at the Tennessee-North Carolina state line at Haw Knob.
Travelers on the Tennessee side of the highway are treated to the magnificent splendor of the Cherokee National Forest, including Bald River Falls and the Tellico River, where it is not uncommon to see a kayak or a leisurely fly fisherman making the most of these grand river resources.
Sweetwater is the most populous city in Monroe County and is the home of the Craighead Caverns which contains the Lost Sea, the United States' largest underground lake.
Tellico Plains is a vintage mountain town in East Tennessee, at the gateway to the Cherohala Skyway and the Cherokee National Forest in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Outdoor recreational opportunities are plentiful, with hiking, camping, picnicking, swimming, bicycling, boating, fishing, hunting, sight-seeing and more. Backpackers can discover secluded unspoiled wilderness, protected in the 640,000-acre Cherokee National Forest. Bald RIver Falls, just a short drive into the Cherokee National Forest from the center of Tellico Plains, cascades nearly 100 feet, and is easily viewed from the roadside, making it a popular area landmark.
