Putnam's county seat is Cookeville. The name of the county is in honor of General Israel Putnam. The county is part of the greater Cumberland River watershed. The southern part of the county is drained by tributaries of the Caney Fork, the northeastern part by tributaries of the Obey River, and the north-central and northwestern parts of the county drain into the Cumberland's Cordell Hull Lake impoundment. The sources of two tributaries of the Caney Fork, the Falling Water River and the Calfkiller River, lie near Monterey in the eastern part of the county.
The county has some top-rated golf courses, lakes, rivers, hiking, championship fishing, hunting, and an amazing variety of sports (including Tennessee Tech University) and other activities.
