Smith County was created in 1799 and is named for Daniel Smith, a Revolutionary War veteran who made the first map of Tennessee and served as a United States senator. Its county seat is Carthage. Smith County is located at the base of the Cumberland Plateau in Middle Tennessee and is geographically blessed with some of the most scenic vistas to be found in Tennessee. A comfortable drive from Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga, the county hosts a panoramic view of the Cumberland River from the historic Cordell Hull Bridge. Smith County is southern hospitality with its beautiful scenic countryside, rural roads that wind around majestic hills, rivers, lakes and creeks with great fishing and hunting.
